RENOVATION & ADDITION

SUPPORTIVE ARCHITECTURE™ IN PRACTICE

LOVE OF BOOKS

Books were an important part of these homeowners’ lives. One worked for a well known national book seller; the other was an avid collector and seller of books, including many first editions. As the collection grew, so did their need for a substantial home library.

An earlier renovation created library space in their basement. A later plan to expand that house was stopped by zoning. The solution changed, but their priorities did not.

After purchasing another home, they could think more broadly. A large addition provided the library they had long wanted while also reflecting other parts of their life: their Italian heritage, outdoor entertaining, a pool, covered porch, concave balcony, and stronger connections between inside and outside.

At the same time, the addition needed to belong to the existing Colonial home rather than feel like an unrelated attachment.
